The notes at the side of each bird are not highly organised and just contain random jottings with some concentration on the status of the respective bird in Nottinghamshire, some historical reference, (if I could find any) and maybe some interesting facts about the bird. It is not a list of rare birds — there are plenty of those, and it is not an id guide — there are even more of those.

The sources are varied and come from my own experience (such as it is), the Trent Valley and Nottingham Birdwatcher annual reports, various other local society reports, the Birds of Nottinghamshire by Austin Dobbs, the Descriptive List of the Birds of Nottinghamshire by W. J. Sterland & J. Whitaker {1879}, the Birds of Sherwood Forest by W. J. Sterland {1869}, various other magazines and books and assorted internet sources.
